It's to Labour's shame that they didn't get behind any of the campaigns against the Poll Tax at that time, in fact the parliamentary Labour party were making almost the same noises as the Tories themselves about the protesters and the non-payment campaign. Many activists left the party because of it. However, a great many of the rank and file of the party supported the APTUs that sprang up in every town over the country, even if privately. What a demo that was.

People having picnics on the grass opposite downing street were interupted by riot cops on horses. Our peaceful sit down (we were not stood) demo as you say outside downing street was marred by cops hitting us with sticks. Come on the facts get blurred this riot was not the act of a few mindless idiots and you dishonour the brave people who fought against this injustice. The police lost control of London for ten hours that is not four guys balaclavas FACT.

Sorry, but the Iraq war would have been supported by the Tories if they were in power. Stagflation was a global issue, there was little they could have done about it. What this video shows is a stark divide in society which Thatcher's policies created, okay Labour are the Conservatives now, but we havent seen a divide in society like this under this New Labour government. If you vote blue you can be guaranteed division in society if they come into power.
The protesters were not thugs. It was the police and the Thatcher government that were thugs, just as they were during the Miner Strike of 84 and the nasty treatment against the Liverpool 47 also during the mid 1980s. If the Tories ever get back in power, it would be too soon. The thing, however, is that I hope that the British Labour Party get its act together and end the Thatcher-lite policies of Blair-Brown, and let's hope to see the return of socialism as the bedrock ideology for Laobur.
