Excellent video! I'm sure in 1953 there was lots of open farmland once you reached Union or Middlesex County NJ coming out of New York, and then going all the way to WV and beyond.. Too bad that way of life has been pushed aside...Agribusiness has replaced agriculture.

So I wonder how long it take for Gustave to drive out there... I'm guessing it didn't take all that much longer than it would today... the New Jersey Turnpike was just completed and of course the Pennsylvania Turnpike (albeit the slowdowns in the 2-lane tunnels). After around Pittsburgh or so it was probably all back roads so that part probably took longer (unsure of when I-70 was built there).

You're right, we used to drive for several hours on rural routes to get from the Pittsburgh area to our destination. Once we entered West Virginia those roads got really twisty and hilly, and us kids in the station wagon ALWAYS got car sick! 1-70 was built in the late 60's, to everyone's relief.
