Studio recording of The Axis of Awesome's "4 Chords". The song that proves that all you need to be a pop star is four simple chords.

The audio is accompanied with a slide show of the original artists.

Different recordings of "4 Chords" will vary as the band continually updates the song with the latest hits that use the structure.

  • I brought myself here.

  • All started by Paul McCartney in Let It Be.

  • in other words... music itself is being rip-off...

the artist nowadays dont have new inspiration to make new chords so they use the same tune over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again...

    nice voice anyway...

  • I can't believe this re-uploads has so many views, you are literally taking money away from Axis of Awesome.

  • What are the 4 chords?

  • For the songs after Take On Me (3:15), the progression changes to VIm, IV, I, V. It's the same progression, just starting on the minor sixth chord first.

  • @Cataphract Slideshow excellent, thanks!

  • MISINFORMATION ALERT! Various comments here state that this is a I,IV,V,IV progression. For all you poor sods trying to get I,IV,V,IV to sound right -- you won't. A bread and butter songwriting progresssion, this is a I,V,VIm,IV (Tonic, Dominant, Relative Minor, Subdominant). The Axis of Awesome 4 Chords "song" is a brilliant piece of work that should be referenced by every music teacher. In this key (E) it's E, B, C#m A. For similar fun try I,VIm,IV,V -- less contemporary but very familiar?

  • Well what if they didn't only use 4 chords for full version

  • Because not the whole song is those 4 chords, most of the time. They just pick out bits from each song that can be sung to those chords.
