"Pete York once mentioned to me "He plays the same solo since Skin Deep"
I don't know why Pete York would say such a thing... I've just compared the Hudson vid to a 1955 one & there is a big difference.
It is true that he often repeated signature licks, but so do most drummers. The same could be said for Buddy Rich who nearly always included the over and under crossover thing and the single roll 'big finish' .
Can't say I've spent very long watching Pete York's solos....
@Stickgeneral524 Totally disagree.. you must not be a true student of LouiE (not LouiS).. I see lots of changes in Louie's playing over the years.. and not only did he grow as a drummer but also as a musician with composing and arranging (s0mething most drummers don't have a clue about). Your GENERAL comment could be said about all great drummers, the only difference is that don't have NEAR the career span that Louie had. Totally disagree with your statement in SPECIFIC...
Buddy was great but Louie was my man. That last interview with Modern Drummer before he died - his good cheer and enthusiasm just popped off of every page! The upshot: 1) take good care of your body 2) be open and inviting to different experiences 3) spread the knowledge and the love of the music 4) remember how lucky you are to be able to play drums!
How old was he here? Bellson "invented" the double bass in 1938. "Back in 1938 when I was in high school," Bellson says, "my mechanical drawing teacher saw me making this rough sketch of a double-bass drum kit, and he said, 'What is that?' I told him, 'It's a new style of drum set...' he said, 'This is great,' and encouraged me to send it to several drum companies, which I later did. And they all said I was crazy." When you do something like that, then you can criticize. The man is a legend.
@Easleytee, lol, I was heavily impressed by Bellsons double bass power when I was 17 or 22 but the more progress your playing does the less you get impressed. There are solos like Bellson´s record with Manne, Bobo, Humphrey that I never could play that fluently, this is world class. But I jammed with Cobham in Zurich in the 90ies, believe me, it looked like that one: watch?v=y2ikhatPxNE - the whole ACM was on their feet, and I got the best groupies, too. :)

Yes, I have all your recordings playing Bellson's solos...particularly those featured on his 1963 Thunderbird recording.
You sound positively brilliant!
