[ABOUT CHIYO-GAMI]
Most people know about "Ori(fold)gami(paper)-折り紙". There are so many different types of origami paper today, but originally, the word "Ori-gami" derived from "Chiyo(a very long period, like thousand years)-gami(paper). Chiyo-gami paper are traditionally created by hand with the highest quality Japanese paper, and also hand dyed by woodblock print, one color by one color, one paper by one paper just like Kimono fabric. It takes several days to produce one paper. It takes five years to become a Chiyo-gami master.

Therefore, historically, Chiyo-gami was consumed in imperial palace, and also used for calligraphy by upper class Japanese. Ordinary citizens could not own it.
However, the Edo period came, Chiyo-gami spread from Kyoto to Edo(Tokyo)and began to be sold at the store which sells "Nishiki e(picture)". Nishiki picture is gorgeous and colorful woodcut print which is particular to Japanese. Those "Ukiyoe" artist had very good printing techniques, so Chiyo-gami became much cheaper since then.

Nishiki picture was to mainly portrait of Kabuki actor/historical person, so they were just like poster of Tom cruise or something like that:)Girls worked at Edo castle fold Chiyo-gami paper that relates to their favorite Kabuki actors to make something.
This is how Chiyo-gami became very popular.

[ABOUT TSURU(CRANE)]
In Japan, Cranes are symbol of long life as it is shown in an idiom "Tsuru ha sen-nen, Kame ha man-nen"(Cranes lives thousand years, Turtles live ten thousand years).
We believe that they can reach to heaven because their callings travels far away like they can reach to heaven.(^o^)
They are also symbol of happy married couple.

[ABOUT HOURAI SUZU(BELL)]
Tiny Japanese bells called Hourai-suzu make cute sound. "Hourai" means "coming treasure", and "Suzu" means "bell". It is believed in Japan that the treasure will come to you when you wear Hourai-suzu(^o^)

  • A few years ago a lady friend in Florida took me to a shooting range, I had the use of a 45 auto and my friend had a small 9mm, what really drew peoples attention was the fact that the pistol came in an ornate velvet lined box with Chiyogami on the lid and matching Chiyogami grips, I wish I had a picture to show you as it drew a lot of attention from everyone at the range.
