@strangestdude I'm very impressed by people who've overcome intense indoctrination. It was easier for me. I was brought up to believe in the christian god, and to pray, but my parents didn't belong to any religion, so I was free to investigate on my own, asking questions of other kids, and even adults. Initially, my questions were simply to gain understanding, but, as time went on, and I got no rational answers, my questions became more challenging. Eventually, I realized I no longer believed.

@faro0485 Irrelevant to the truth claim of Islam or Christianity. Community and cult are the same if you are not allowed to leave voluntarily or think freely.
There is a reason he isn't showing his face....

Congratulations on you Apostate status. That took guts.
Ain't it amazing how you feel when you understand.

Towards the end, when you were talking about how religion can create a negative self-image and/or a false sense of superiority, "pecking order" came to mind. One is taught to accept a certain level of abuse from those "above," but also that one can abuse those "below." So, a man who is belittled by clergy can take out his frustrations on his wife and kids, the wife on the kids (and probably herself), the kids on other kids, and, of course, other species often pay the price for human angst.

@YY4Me133 I didn't make that connection, but I think there is truth to what you're saying. I did notice that tendency. Thanks for the contribution.
