Bluesman Joe Callicott (1899-1969) recorded only two songs (this one and Travelling Mama Blues) in 1930. He was rediscovered and recordedd a fine album in 1967 (Fat Possum 0360 "Aint A Gonna Lie To You").
His rhythmic fingerpicking style is still heard in the work of North Mississippi artists such as Robert Belfour and R.L. Burnside.
Paul Rishell also does a fine version of this song on his cd "Moving To The Country".
You can find tab for his version on this site

I'm playing a 1960ties LG12 Gibson.
Drop D tuning (tuned down one step)

  • Mr Stovepipe, Could you spell out the exact tuning of each string, please? Do you mean it's tuned to an open D, or is just the E string dropped down? If you could spell out all the open string notes, I would be eternally grateful.

  • @0209KMK58 from the first course of strings (the thinnest strings) the tuning would be : DD AA Ff Cc Gg Cc; which is standard tuning but with courses 1 to 5 two steps down and the sixth course 4 steps down (the small capitals indicat one octave higher).

Drop D tuning in standard tuning would be : low to high DADGBE

  • Does your 12 string have the thicker or thiner one of the two courses on top. Most 12 strings have the thinner string on top, making it quite difficult to finger pick.

  • @0209KMK58 Thinner strings are on top - if you play with a thumbpick it's not difficult to fingerpick - some excellent 12-string pickers, like Paul Geremia, use bare fingers with great results - it may take a while to get used to but it's possible.

  • I have no idea....got it on ebay, it's from around 1969

  • how to get hold of the tab, the link doesn't work?

  • @karlw12

thanks, I checked and corrected with a new link in the description

  • nice hat

  • very cool,

  • Wonderful: Please tell us about that guitar . is that one of those old Gibson's that were made in Kalamazoo Michigan? They were gems!!

  • Great job, I have a friend who is entirely smitten with this song, I shall pass on the tab info to him. Bruce Molsky does a hell of a good job with it on his CD Soon to be Time.

  • Nice song and nice playing there Daddy!
