I use a cotton ball with the pastel colors on them. Gives a nicer effect

I am planning on stenciling something with soft pastels, I need to know, will this EVER completly dry so it won't rub off once it's stenciled on? I just ask b/c I notice it is sold UNCOVERED, so was wondering what keeps it from drying in the container.

Wuts the difference between soft pastels and hard pastels? And wut would be better for making a graffiti-like drawing?

@redlightningstriker definitely soft pastels !

@pup101 Well, honestly it would probably take a lot. It's really inhaling the dust that's more of the problem. If you plan on doing pastels as an on going thing (like your main medium of choice for years to come) you should certainly at least wear a dust mask. Honestly, the cheap 'kiddy' non-toxic ones would be ok for this project. Chopping up some Rembrandt pastels, less of a good idea.

@ColdIronChef yeah how much pastel do you think it will take to kill you>??? LMFAO!!! drinking too much water can also kill you how much do you think you would have to drink???

Pastels pigments can be toxic and absorbed through the skin, you should wear latex gloves or wash your hands frequently. Even though the manufactures have mostly stopped using toxic ingredients, some colors still contain toxic ingredients becuase there is no other way to make the pigment. (cobalt, cadmium). Pastels are certainly not for a craft for young children.
However, this is a cool effect!
whichs are better oil pastels or soft pastels
