News Update: Hostage Situation in Manila Philippines ends with eight tourists killed August 24, 2010

A hostage situation in Manila Philippines turned fatal on Monday. CNN reports that in a 10 hour standoff, a former police officer who was upset over losing his job held hostage a tour bus carrying Hong Kong tourists. The officer has been identified as Roland Mendoza. The hostage situation ended with Mendoza being shot dead on the scene -- but not before he managed to kill eight hostages. Questions about how the hostage situation was handled are now being called into question. Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has ordered a full investigation and will await the findings before he makes a decision about final disposition. CNN reports that in Hong Kong, officials and residents are devastated. Authorities in Hong Kong confirmed that four men and four women were killed in the standoff. Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang further commented that one passenger was critically wounded and six others were hospitalized with less serious injuries after the 10-hour standoff erupted into gunfire. CNN reports that Manila Vice Mayor Ikso Moreno indicated that Mendoza was dismissed from his job a year ago on grounds of extortion. Moreno stated, "He felt neglected. So he went on hostaging a bus full of foreign individuals." Mendoza reportedly wanted his motion for reconsideration of his case surrounding his dismissal to be heard.
