The last sound guy I used didn't give me sound check either. And when I asked the stage manager that was "helping" (and by helping, I mean bitching because I switched my pedal for the DW that was on the stage kit) set up, he told me he wasn't the sound guy and to fuck off. Well, if you'd turn on some fucking lights so I can see and talk to the sound guy, then I wouldn't be asking your 70 year old ass. And I'll change my pedal if I fucking want.

@garyc2 I can relate on that one. The usual pattern of headliner gets all the time he/she needs, everybody else gets nothing or if they're "lucky", 3 minutes of quick level-setting really does make it hard to get things right on the stage. A lot of engineers do fail to realize that although we can get the FOH mix right during the first song, the band is stuck with whatever got slapped on them for monitors if we didn't at least give them a quick chance to get them how they want them.
-
@garyc2 It would also be useful if club owners knew how to tune a drum and employed a proper lighting engineer so I don't look like a witch because they only put the green lights on as they like the color lol that's been my experience in a lot of small clubs. I have played gigs in venues that hold about ten people all the way up to places that hold 4000 plus doing band work singing in choirs, Musicals and acting etc in that time I have been able to spot the good from the bad.

Some gigs I don't even get a sound check and I can't hear anything from the monitors. I like to keep the levels fairly low on the stage to get some separation of each instrument. A lot of time the front of house sounds far too loud for the venue and everything is over compressed and sound lifeless. I have played gigs in the same places with other sound guys and the sound on and off stage was more controlled and fuller.

Really, the bottom line is that the musicians and sound tech need to have respect for each other and trust in each other. There are some narrow minded people on both sides of the discussion. There certainly is something to be gained from having a hole in the resonant head (click / 3k), BUT if the drummer has a certain sound he's going after, he ought to discuss it with the tech, rather than simply shutting the door on the discussion. Both people can stand to learn something, after all.

@garyc2 Sounds like somebody who doesn't understand feedback and gain-staging and doesn't much care if the club blows a horn or 5 because he'll be wreaking havoc in a new club tomorrow night. ;)

LOL! I ran sound for a jazz concert this weekend, and I'm a drummer. The folks that booked the band were suppose to supply a drum kit. We were given a beginners kit with plastic heads, and cymbal stands that may or may not hold. I ended up bringing my snare with a coated head, so you could hear the brushes. Luckily the drummer was cool (he was 71 yrs old). We both made jokes and laughed about the situation while doing some major work on the kit to make it playable. 1 cymbal fell during the show.

@vrc02 No just most of them!

Funny but dumb👎. Professional sound engineers would never do that! Local crew would lol

not all sound techs are bad musicians......

@vrc02 I know. The best sound techs are great musicians, have the best ears, and are the nicest guys in the world. This clip is about my experiences with the bad ones. No offense intended to all the brilliant sound techs out there.

@tfdrums Hey Tim, absolutely love your drumming dude, its kinda weird hearing you play makes me want to play drums, whilst im a guitarist. Question, are these encounters word for word or are they elaborated on?

@chabstickss Thanks mate. These clips ive made are all made up, with a few comments ive heard in the past (eg the hole in the bass drum head, and drum triggers).
