According to the Office of National Statistics, 1.72 million people are out of work in the UK. From May to July the number of people out of work increased by 81,000 people. This leaves the UK unemployment rate at 5.5%.
In August, 904,900 people claimed jobseekers allowance.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) warned that by the end of 2009 the number of people unemployed could be significantly higher. They also forecasted that the number of people being out of work for at least 12 months at a time could increase to about 700,000 by the end of 2009, bringing the total unemployment rate over two million.
