  • Holy crap, that German guy that talks around appears at several stages of the documentary. Man, he lived through A LOT!!!!

  • @MANDELAZZA I imagine that they hadn't re-written the tactics book when they got new weaponry, still in Napoleon mode.

  • Two reasons why WWI gets so little coverage compared to WWII - first, not much footage existed, largely because of censorship and the rotten conditions and early stage of motion picture, although still photo was well developed.

secondly - its such a total anti-war example, it makes war a hard sell for imperialists.

  • Stupidest most pointless war in history. So glad I missed it. Most wars are stupid, but this one really drives the point home.

450000 casualties on the British to gain 7 miles of advance. Pretty ludicrous. This is the kind of war where desertion is the best idea.

  • wow...even though the second world war there was more technology in weaponry, there werent battles that even came close to killing half a million soldiers from a single side, were there?

  • I'm just wondering, why did they ever think, in any war, that walking in solid lines would be effective against a wall of rifles and artillery?

  • @ulaghchi Shut the fuck up, a 100 years ago was a world away from where we are now!

  • @TopUncle Thank you so much. I tried to find it on Google, but I could only find the first 2 lines and that was about all.

  • @trunsako95zelda We are the guns, and your masters ! Saw ye our flashes?

Heard ye the scream of our shells in the night, and the shuddering

    crashes ?

Saw ye our work by the roadside, the shrouded things lying,

Moaning to God that He made them the maimed and the dying ?

    Husbands or sons,

Fathers or lovers, we break them. We are the guns !

It's from "The Guns" by Gilbert Frankau. You can find it on Google
