Short little clip of me firing my SMLE at a friends private range. Unfortunately stacked my rounds badly and got rimlock on the first round, but fixed it, as you can see.

The rifle is a Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk.III* made in 1917 at RSAF Enfield. It was FTRed (Factory Thorough Repaired) at Lithgow in Australia in 1951, and was fitted with Australian Coachwood furniture, a brass barrel band and Australian pattern front sights.

This particular day I fired three different types of round. I myself had a small quantity of Greek surplus, non corrosive. I was unable to find any more of it in the local area so most of what I fired was commercial Privi made softpoints. My friend did give me a few British surplus corrosive rounds. Technically bad for your rifle but if you clean it, not a problem (and my re-enactment group always used corrosive so I became a little bit of an obsessive cleaner anyway). Also, you just can't beat the smell of cordite.

  • Explain the smell of cordite please haven't had the chance to shoot any rounds with cordite as the propelant

  • @nativedjd

Well, from my experience, it smells like cooked cheap hotdogs. Nothing else like it :) I guess it's one of those smells that is nice at first, but after 30 minutes or so it gets overpowering and sickening.

  • I don't see any "waving around", after the first round jamming from rimlock I was checking to make sure the rest were going as they should.

  • good job there were no germans comeing at ya

  • this has the best sound of any gun

  • What a great range your friend has! I have an SMLE and I L O V E it!!! I have a safe full of weapons of all kinds but I have a special love for this British gem. You can click onto my videos and see mine in action if you like. A perfect weapon with an honorable history.

  • If .303 wasn't so expensive , I'd snatch on up right away.

  • @nativedjd What's cordite?

  • @columnsx

ah right, well i for one aren't too bothered about those. Granted its a shame to not be able to shoot them but i'm rather glad about our gun laws.

  • @HauptmannRob I know about rifles, im referring to guns such as the BREN, webley and sten

  • @columnsx

Well, by abiding by our 'shitty gun laws' I could well have a LE No4 by the end of the academic year. Its not too hard to get one if you have a legitimate reason and can actually use the thing.

  • It mus be great over there, none of our shitty gun laws holding you back from having fun with some classic british guns!

  • Cordite? I heard its made of animal fat, right?
