Richard Tucker sings "Donna non vidi mai" from Puccini's "Manon Lescaut." This is from a October 21, 1967 Metropolitan Opera performance where Francesco Molinari-Pradelli conducted. Other cast members included Renata Tebaldi (Manon), William Walker (Lescaut), Raymond Michalski (Geronte), Charles Anthony (Edmondo), Russell Christopher (Innkeeper), Marcia Baldwin (Solo Madrigalist), Mary Fercana (Madrigalist), Helen McIlhenny (Madrigalist), Dina De Salvo (Madrigalist), Pamela Munson (Madrigalist), Andrea Velis (Dancing Master), Robert Goodloe (Sergeant), Dan Marek (Lamplighter), and Gene Boucher (Captain). This seems to have been recorded from the audience so the volume is low in some of the quieter passages. The picture was also taken from the audience on the same night.

  • @jmccracken1963 thanks for info, at least we have his 1959 performance with Tebaldi in decent if not great sound. That was a terrific performance.

  • @SHICOFF1 The IL TROVATORE to which you are alluding is actually from the previous Met season (18 February 1967, to be exact, from the 1966-67 season). This performance is from the fall of the 1967-68 season. What a pity that he didn't broadcast Des Grieux come 23 March 1968; that afternoon, John Alexander sang the role, with Tebaldi again as Manon Lescaut.

  • very good, a great role for him. i like recordings that give a good picture of in-house sound.

  • Wonderful!!

  • He also sang a great Manrico with Arroyo that year from the Met. and it will be on sirius radio tomorrow as it was yesterday. You can hear this was an in house recording from the audience but the power of his voice when he opens up was amazing! Well sung. Every note he sang was heard both piano and forte all over the house whenever I heard him, yes a very powerful rich voice.
