The number is probably high because of some traditional cult-ish version of hinduism that has become the norm is many societies. (religion's to blame again !)
This is more common in rural areas where there is little or no education and the concept of untouchables (dalits) is wide-spread.

Life in prison? I hope he's doing some serious labour that will help pay for the wife's education. Either that or he can starve to death in my opinion. I think the guy had some pretty damned serious self-esteem issues, he was probably feeling threatened that his wife, a WOMAN, would become more educated/smarter than him.
