Archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn and historian Ruth Goodman arrive at Morwellham Quay in Devon - once home to one of the busiest ports in Britain. For the next twelve months they will be attempting to bring it back to life as it was in its Edwardian heyday.
In September they begin with the basics. They set up home in one of the cottages, where the first task - after cleaning - is unblocking the chimney so they can get the range working in order to cook.
They prepare for the arrival of their first livestock - a flock of sheep and a ram called Cyril, and Ruth cheers up the cottage by making a rug out of rags. And she cooks her first meal on the range - a sheep's head stew. Alex builds a hay rick to store feed for the animals over winter; while Peter heads to Bodmin moor to carve a stone feeding trough.
And they must plant crops. The high acidity of the soil makes it infertile for growing crops, so the top priority is neutralising the acid with fertilizer - and for this they must make deadly quicklime. They will need literally tonnes of the stuff. It is a hazardous and gruelling - but essential - job.

  • @SiJePuisCalhoun I agree. Being a Canadian who had ancestors start farms in Ontario, would love to see a Canadian pioneer series.

  • Google "wartime farm"

  • @gryph01 They had Pioneer Quest about 10 years ago. 2 couples went and livde in Manitoba for a year like the pioneers. It was pretty good.

  • Ruth suddenly looks like Princess Anne!

  • I'm glad to see they're filming a new series, but I think it's time to send the crew to the colonies. Colonial Farm would be a series worth watching --especially in Canada (snow and Grizzly Bears) or Australia (hot & poisonous bitey things). Part of the British experience, for millions, was emigrating --it'd be nice to see that in a series.

  • @peterginnsfanmanager

As far as I can remember Peter, Ruth and Alex are in all the series (Victorian and Edwardian Farm, Tales from the Green Valley, Victorian Christmas and A Tudor Feast). Victorian Pharmacy has Ruth and a couple of new people 'hosting'.

    I might be forgetting one

And no, I'm a teenage girl with a facial hair problem

  • Hi Odd - His modesty in the face of sheer handsomeness is exceptionally rare these days. And you are absolutely correct; he is the workhorse of the team, the powerful man who comes and does heavier tasks where the other two cant handle it. He is witty and has tons of common sense also. You are very accurate in describing him. I hope you are a guy if you look even remotely like him ! I did read about the earlier episodes but discounted them as I thought PG would still be at university. Thanks

  • @peterginnsfanmanager

I'm a Ginn fan too, though for different reasons. Out of the group I feel like he's the one I relate to the most. He's got common sense, and he's witty while being modest. He's the 'workhorse' of the team and does the heavier tasks.

I even look a bit like him when I think about it...

  • The only reason for watching this is to see the incredibly handsome Peter Ginn in action. A man of such modesty and stunning good looks is a rare combination.

  • Wow....I've just found this video out by chance. Thank you for sharing! BTW, I think it's healthier to do all those activities on a daily basis (excluding the health hazards of course!)
