Residents on La Gomera in the Canary Islands once communicated in a special language called Silbo Gomero, which consists only of whistling. The sound is carried easily across the island's valleys.

Al Jazeera's Tania Page says the language is making a comeback thanks to compulsory school lessons. The regional government has also applied to Unesco to have the tradition protected.
