Here is a video taken in American Fork, Utah County, Utah on August 21, 2009. We entered a wet meadow habitat to look for monarch caterpillars on milkweed taking refuge under thickets of Russian Olive trees. Most milkweed plants growning out in the open fields seem to NOT have larvae.

  • i live in AF...which wetland did you go to in this clip?

  • @katybusus Hi Katy,

The Google Earth Coordinates for this video are 40°21'30.64"N 111°46'32.92"W or it is the NW intersection of East Utah Valley Drive and 4850 West in American Fork, Utah. I hope that habitat is still there and is not another commercial building. The time to look for monarch immatures is right now!! Good luck!! • gir165. If you google Jeff Pippen Monarchs, you will be directed to his page. Jeff writes "The Monarch migrates into NC each spring, lays eggs on milkweeds (Asclepias spp.), completes its life cycle, and the new generation migrates back south in the fall. A few may be found overwintering along the immediate southern NC coast, although this is not their normal habit of the population."

  • what other plants do they like??

  • @mosmanparkdan Adults like to roost in trees during the summer in order to escape the heat of the day. Caterpillars feed on many varieites of milkweed; including the vine Sarcostemma clausum. One of the keys to identifying milkweed is that it bleeds white when you remove cuttings; but, it isn't the only plant that bleeds white.
