So, I finally finished my extensive mod for the Ion cymbals. Utter failure. I am so disappointed. The electrical tape does seem to reduce the amount of crosstalk that occurs (which would be much more frequent than this if it were not there). However, this is done at the expense of sensitivity, since the electrical tape over the sensor seems to increase sensitivity too much, which leads to significant increase in double hits.
Before I removed the plastic casing surrounding the sensor, double hits were becoming more and more frequent as time passed by. I concluded that this was do to the reverberating plastic covering (since the plastic screw tabs were breaking off every now and then). So I removed it. By doing so, I started seeing crosstalk for the first time ever. I had NEVER had crosstalk with my cymbals before removing the plastic casing.
I have owned this kit, with all three cymbals, for at least two years. I got it shortly after it was released for the PS3. Im not really worried about my failure. Kits like this need the pads replaced once in a while. I would have needed to replace the toms a long time ago due to them starting to bubble, but I fixed that with a mod, too. Just didnt work so well with the cymbals...
Meh, I wont be replacing these. Ill never buy another Ion or Alesis product ever again. I know this isnt exactly Alesis' fault, but I dont care.
See my discussion of this on pages 11 and 12 of the thread "ION drums crosstalk - running out of options.. desperately need help." in section "Hardware Support" on the Rock Band Forum: http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210559&page=11
