Kraków In Your Pocket editor Garret Van Reed explains the origins of Planty Park which rings Kraków's Old Town. Referred to as the lungs of the city, the belt of parkland (Planty) that rings the old town is a relatively new addition to the Kraków landscape. Once the site of a three kilometre stretch of defensive walls, the 13th century medieval moats were filled in and the towers demolished during the first half of the 19th century.
