It's played in octaves but it is typically just written in one octave but you can go up to 2 octaves and a little more if you use the strings individually. or if you use harmonics you can go even higher (like he did on this video)

And yes it is fretless.

I supose you dont need as long a neck when you have 6 strings but what kind of range do you get on that
