Minister Dallas Alahapperuma said in thulawa political talk show on 19.11.09 that an Eelam conspiracy is being hatched against Sri Lanka by pro-Eelamists using General Sarath Fonseka as a common candidate for the next presidential election against President Mahinda Rajapakse to split the nation.

Lankaweb: WIMAL WEERAWANSA REVEALS A SECRET DURING THE EELAM WAR 4 WHICH GENERAL SARATH FONSEKA TOLD HIM OVER THE PHONE
Walter Jayawardena Posted on November 5th, 2009
Wimal Weerawansa said that during the last war to eliminate the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and its leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was going on, General Sarath Fonseka called the then JVP parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa over the phone, Weerwansa said yesterday.
That was the time there was a conspiracy to defeat the government in the parliament. General Sarath Fonseka reportedly told Weerawansa do not let the government fall; if that happened the war to destroy the LTTE will collapse, he alarmed. Weerawansa replied he would try to do something.
Weerawansa said, at that time he was the only parliamentarian General Fonseka called.
Wimal Weerawansa, now the leader of the National Freedom Front, was speaking in the Thulawa talk show by Sudharman Radaliyagoda of the state owned Independent Television Network (ITN) on Thursday (5th Nov 2009).
Talking about the political gossip spread by certain websites Weerawansa said General Fonseka is one of the few modern heroes Sri Lanka produced and he did not think the General would never betray the country and would get into the trap of the reactionaries. Much of the stories spread cannot be believed. The Lankadeepa published a news item , Weerawansa said, that Ranil Wickramasinghe , the UNP leader spoke to Fonseka over the satellite phone on Fonsekas alleged break with the government. If Wickramasinghe ever talked to Fonseka would he ever publicise that, Weerawansa queried. He said , the Lankadeepa published the story on the request of Ranil Wickramasinghe. Weerawansa said, the imperialistic reactionary forces wanted to create a Pilimathalawwa out of Fonseka. Pilimathalawwa did not get into history as a national hero but as a man who ate crumbs of the white man. Due to the split between Pilimathalawwa and King Rajasingha the Sinhale Kingdom collapsed and the white man won, a military feat impossible before this rift. He said Fonseka, a real hero of a historical war of liberation never would want to become that.
He said the very people who started praising Fonseka who said earlier that he was not even fit to be the Commander of the Salvation Army. One said any fool could go to war. Another one said instead of Kilinochchiya he was taking the army to medawachchiya. Ranil Wickramasinghe said Thoppigala which he helped capture was mere jungle.
Weerawansa said the recent pity shown for Fonseka by these reactionary forces reminds him of the pity shown by the foxes telling that the goat was getting wet in the rain.

For all these reasons, Sarath Fonseka was denied what he felt was his rightful place as Army commander. It is said that President Rajapakse was also reluctant to appoint Sarath but Gotabhaya got his brother to go ahead . Apparently the President relied on his brothers guarantee that Sarath would be managed by him (Gota).
This is how Sarath became Army chief. After the first year Mahinda wanted to let Sarath go but again Gotabhaya intervened and stayed his brothers hand. In the early stages Gotabhaya evolved a satisfactory working relationship with Sarath and set the military juggernaut rolling forward.
Both had a lot in common as they were fellow Anandians and more or less of the same age. Sarath got into the army as part of the third intake while Gotabhaya was of the fourth intake. They served together in crucial battlefronts like that of Vadamaratchy in 1987. Both played a role in the midnight express evacuation exercise of Jaffna Fort in 1990. Sarath was Colonel and Gotabhaya Lt. Colonel when the latter quit the army.
Common bond
Another bond between both was their common intention of destroying the LTTE.The reverse of this was that the LTTE also was determined to kill both as the tigers realised that the death of this duo would cripple the war effort beyond redemption.
Sarath Fonseka was seriously injured in a woman suicide bomber attempt within army headquarters but miraculously survived and bounced back in what was perhaps a medical marvel. This was another revelation of the mans grit and stamina
