Thing how much power they could get out of it with a maglin induction kit.
-
They used those engines in tanks as well did they not?
-
Thats just a massive engine... Awesome

point taken.

i was just commenting in reletion to the Merlin instalment in the Mustang prior to the lesser performing Allison. Yes it was a wonderful plane aerodynamically - still is...but engine wise the Merlin bought it to life in the B,C, D and further variants.
Of course there were better negines in WWII.
-
the P-51 wasn't what it was because of its engine, it was what it was because of its aerofoil and its streamlined shape allowing better range and speed. there were several better engines during WWII. the Merlin was just the "'ol standby" for mass production aircraft.
-
the merlin and meteor were DOHC originally.

Imagine how fast that would go with taller gears!
I wonder who was laughing their t***s off at 0.10.? LOL

what a waste of such a limited resource the merlin should be back in a plane where it belongs

If it was indeed a Merlin, perhaps it would be but if you read 'about this video' you will in fact see that it is a Meteor engine. This is similar to the Merlin but it isn't supercharged and was generally used in tanks.
