Since that time,there have been 122 different recording of the song (according to TRO,the small publishing and copyright controller of both Hammer and Woody's "This Land Is Your Land".

The song was featured on the front cover of the premiere issue of "Sing Out! magazine in 1950. Mr. Hay's lyrics had been changed from "all of my brothers" to "my brothers and my sisters" (with his blessings) by a young woman's right's feminist. (continued)

The lyrics had been written (according to Mr. Hays) in under twenty minutes...inspired by the world events he had seen unfolding before his very eyes at the time...most notably, what was to later be termed the Cold War. Pete Seeger had written an (admittedly) not so good tune for the song. In 1962 some yourg people (Peter Paul and Mary) had re-written Grandpa Pete's tune...and it was then that the song had taken off (as they say)

I work with the developmentally disabled, and know of someone who loves this song very much and it lights up his day when he sees me in the morning and I sing it to him.
