I would not necessarily leave cream out for 12 hours but if you leave it our for 4-5 hours it takes half that time that it took her. Also take the butter and wrap in cheesecloth or sterile gauze and squeeze the excess liquid out it becomes better butter.
Save the buttermilk for pancakes or other foods needing buttermilk!!

if you leave the cream out for about 12 hours, it becomes butter after about 5 minutes of shaking, if it took 20 minutes I would have given up. Don't forget to rinse all the butter milk off too!
