We modded Crytek's 2004 first person shooter Far Cry and added an adaptive music system that altered the soundtrack according to a complex parameter matrix, which is visualised in this video.
Parameters include enemy proximity, hit/miss ratio, in-game location and health, among others. The adaptive music system is purely reactive as not to spoil the gameplay. The music itself has been composed as small fragments which can be linked in any order, so that the soundtrack is able to adapt within seconds at any point in the game.
