What if you cut the cards exactly at the key card? (I know the odds are slim, but it will happen if you do the the trick a number of times)

No problem. You will notice that your key card is on top or on the bottom. If your key card is on bottom, then their card is on top of the deck... (When looking face up.) Do this on purpose to see for your self... :)
