Paris was founded towards the end of the 3rd century BC on what is now the Île de la Cité by a tribe of Celtic Gauls known as the Parisii. In 508 AD, Frankish king Clovis I united Gaul as a kingdom and made Paris his capital. Paris prospered during the Middle Ages, with the construction of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in the 12th century, the consecration of the beautiful Sainte Chapelle in 1248, the founding of Sorbonne in 1253, and the Louvre began as a fortified palace. Then, the Hundred Years War between Norman England and Paris' Capetian dynasty interrupted its prosperity. A period of tribulations succeeded. Henri of Navarre (later, King Henri IV) was wed in 1572 to coincide with the St Bartholomew's Day massacre of 3000 Huguenots. Louis XIV, known as le Roi Soleil (the Sun King), ascended to the throne in 1643, and nearly bankrupted the national treasury. Louis XVI and his capricious queen, Marie-Antoinette, triggered an uprising of Parisians on 14 July 1789 (the storming of the Bastille). Revolutionary Paris cried for liberty, equality, and fraternity. Imbibing this spirit, I spent almost a week in Paris, and as the old song goes, it is at its best in springtime. Day one, the weather was cool and exhilirating - perfect for a sightseeing tour of the heart of Paris, the City Hall, the Notre Dame, the Latin Quarter, Place de la Concorde, the famous Tour Eiffel, and the Louvre.

  • This is a very nice video, but it could have been sooo much better without the written history blocking the picture. BTW, that wasn't the Sorbonne, it was l'Institute de France.

  • Today the word Sorbonne no longer refers to the University of Paris but to the historical building located in the Latin Quarter in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. And this is the building in the Latin Quarter captured in my video.

  • I have been to Paris a few times also and agree that it is a great walking city. If you want to loose weight live in Paris a month and walk everywhere. The city just draws you outside to explore... the whole of France actually.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....not the guided tour!!!! The best way to see the real Paris is just by taking the metro without knowing where you're gonna get out....without a map even!!! Step out and discover!
