Via Talking Points Memo: "One Santa Fe man is fighting back against the city's program to crack down on people who speed by taking the matter into his own hands — literally. A video released Friday shows an elderly gentleman clad in a white nightgown pull up next to an unmanned speed-enforcement vehicle at about 1:20 a.m and casually unload five gunshots into the windshield before proceeding to drive off...".* Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur break it down on The Young Turks.

I'm pretty sure America will benefit from better use of police manpower. I doubt they'll be laying off cops in America or here in New Zealand or pretty much anywhere else.

And I can't believe that increased use of unmanned cameras to record people - in public mind you - will lead to us being recorded in private. That's a hell of a hurdle to jump, and people won't let that happen sitting down. What we're considering is the equivalent of hundreds more volunteer cops in vans, not big brother.

Its a dangerous step on a slippery slope, when that mode of thinking is justified, it legitimizes the dehumanization of any police force and brings us closer to complete state surveillance. In the end cops will lose jobs and the state will take people acceptance as the signal to take things another step further, then another, etc, next thing you know your grandkid is Winston being forced to do morning exercises in front of his telescreen.

I don't have a problem with the unmanned cameras. Are the cameras doing anything that a cop couldn't do? Are security cameras themselves wrong in the same way? You're doing the same exact thing that should be done and could be done by a cop, but doing it without using the manpower.

Speed limits are there to save lives, if they aren't enforced, then they will be exceeded. Speed cameras only catch people who break the law, this guy is not an 'American hero' he is a fucking dangerous idiot who thinks firing a gun at a device which may save the life of one of his family one day is a good idea.
