But one must also look at Americans. What American is willing to pay 6$/Gl. for gas (like in the UK for example) if the US bought less oil and taxed it more and thus 'supported' less such nasty governments?

I would say next to none. Americans want cheap oil and do not really care if the places they buy it from are run by dictators and their ilk.

The desire for cheap gas is way above concern for human rights for most Americans.

All Americans politicians know this and act accordingly.
