Blacksmithing, how to make blacksmith rivets 001

i get a few ppl asking about rivets, and there are a few ways to make them by hand. this is the first step in this method, with this type of tool, which clamps the material to allow upsetting the rod to create the bulk for the head of the rivet. from here it goes to the header plate and a heading (shaper tool) tool shapes the rivet head. (other video for part 2, the head)
(the three ways are,(1) upset, make larger, the material to form a head, from the shaft size material. (2) reduce from larger stock to form the shaft, leaving the bulk for the head. (3) buy them !........lol ..or..you can forge weld a collar, as for making a bolt/rivet, adding bulk for the head, using heat, hammer and anvil.

Why didn't you put your vise under a power hammer and do it that way?

Excellent. I hadn't considered using a vise like that to rivet. Makes extraction a bit more dependable.

Also, shape the head correctly, then cut threads and you've got yourself a bolt!

@nedge46 They are two different pieces of metal. When you build the tool you first take three pieces of metal and clamp them in the vice. Two of the pieces are thick like 1" square and the center one is a very thin piece of flat bar. Drill right through the flat bar vertically (cutting it in half) the size of the rivet. Then weld a piece of metal to the tool to act as a spring to keep the pieces apart. Then use it like shown here.
