Carlin was using the death penalty to demonstrate biblical bloodlust/revenge that much of American culture and policy is framed on. Any sensible person knows that the death penalty is pretty stupid and doesn't significantly drop crime rates. He effectively showed pro-death policy as a laughable idea.

Comedy is good because it's comedy.

I'm pretty sure the people who go to George Carlin shows know that he was anti-capital punishment. He's using capital punishment as a means of exposing and explaining the love for Biblical revenge and how ridiculous many aspects of American society are.

Comedy is great because it's comedy. People don't go to comedy shows for anything else.
