Custer of the West (USA 1967)
Directed by Robert Siodmak
Soundtrack by Bernardo Segall
Custer of the West is a 1967 American Western film directed by Robert Siodmak. It tells a highly fictionalised version of the life and death of George Armstrong Custer. It was directed by Robert Siodmak and starring Robert Shaw as Custer, Robert Ryan and Mary Ure. The film was shot entirely in Spain.
The plot of the film was very close to that of the 1941 film They Died With Their Boots On, in which Errol Flynn played Custer.

I bought the sound track in 1967 when the film was released. So it exists somewhere. I have no idea what happened to mine. I loved the wistful end theme, which, if I'm not mistaken, was simply called "Why." (That, or I'm out of my mind.)

I adore this score. If only a complete soundtrack or rerecording were made possible.

I've got this one on video. A most unusual film .. I'd call it even 'peculiar'. Of course, it bears no relationship at all to the true story of either the lead-up to the last stand, nor the final battle itself. BUT - that soundtrack MAKES this movie, and gives it its distinctive character. In its own way .. for some reason .. I find it 'hauntingly' appealing. I re-watch it every so often. I've also always been a fan of Robert Shaw as well.
