Aluminum does not rust, it corrodes. Rust forms on steels. On aluminum, 2024T3 and 7075T6, the 2 primary aircraft structural aluminums, several forms of corrosion. Surface, filliform, intergranular, dissimilar metal are just a few. Pure aluminum is not subject to corrosion so most 2024 and 7075 sheets come with Alclad, a .003" coating of pure aluminum to resist corrosion. In airframe, maintenance and repair, aluminum is typically coated with alodine, primed and then painted.

aluminum is naturally rust resistant

@IIproductionsII .........dam......FAIL

@Dimwooo you said the exact same thing...

@BigAndTall666 AN aluminum...not a aluminum

@altair1983 To allow max paint adhesion and to protect the metal surface from being "attacked" by paint solvents. You cannot score or buff aluminium as this also damages the surface skin of the metal which would lead to corrosion.
Primer "sticks " to the surface rather than permiate, it is the primer that is permiated by the undercoat, and the undercoat is further permiated by the topcoat.
All clever stuff ...! :o)

@BigAndTall666 question, if alumin(i)um doesn't rust, why prime it?

this guy is excellent at modelling
but he is a "bolt counter" i.e he would get pissed off
if there was 1 too many rivets on the fuselage. we all like building models
and wining compitions but taking it to far is boring.

@NVanWendy Thank you so much Wendy you certainally are a hothouse of information which i find most helpful. I 100% agree with you there im a bit of a penny pincher i must admit so i like to get my moneys worth when buying my paints, thank you again,

@milesc1949 Hey, each to his own Miles! You'll find, however, that when it comes to all these highly specific color choices the "serious" modelers make ("RLM 02 Gray" and such), the paints available these days are flat acrylics. Some builders don't worry about matching colors exactly, but when you can pay 30, 40 or more bux for a small plane model, many tend to pursue the most accurate finish they can.
Happy modeling!
Do what makes you happy.

I´m a bad painter of the model
