MSY - the three-letter code designation of the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport - is definitely one of the best airport code stories of all. On the last day of 1910, John Moisant, the first person to build and fly a plane with an all metal frame, and the first pilot to fly over the English Channel with a passenger and an animal, died of a broken neck after he was thrown out of his nose-diving aircraft at the current location of New Orleans International Airport. Stock yards for cattle were later put on the land where Moisant met his fate. The owners wanted to honor John Moisant, so they called the stock yards the Moisant Stock Yards, or MSY for short.

"Mack The Knife," by Louis Armstrong

Dig, man! There's goes Mack the Knife!

(Instrumental)

1
Oh, the shark, has, pretty teeth, dear
And he shows them a-pearly white
Just a jackknife has Macheath, yeah
And he keeps it out of sight.

2
When the shark bites with his teeth, dear,
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, though, wears Macheath, yeah
So theres not a trace, hmmmm of red.

3
On the sidewalk Sunday morning,
Lies a body oozin' life
Someones sneakin round the corner
Is that someone Mack the Knife?

4
Hmm, from a tugboat by the river
A cement bags droopin' down
Yeah, the cements just for the weight, dear
Bet you Mack he' s back in town.

5
Look at here Louie Miller disappeared dear
After drawing out his cash
And Macheath spends like a sailor
Did our boy do somethin' rash?

6
Sookie Tawdry, Jenny Diver,
Lotte Lenya, sweet Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, dears,
Now that Macky's back in town...

Take it, Satch!

(Instrumental)

  • Been there couple times.

Never called it Louis Armstrong airport but MSY or New Orleans airport instead.

  • @johnphoenix20009 Kenner is part of N.O.

  • @aajmw Yeah you right. When I took this drive to Louis Armstrong on Sunday, I wanted to hear funeral music. Not the jazz funeral stuff that I want played at my funeral, but the "oh shit I'm dead" stuff played at yankee funerals.

  • @johnphoenix20009 Who gives a shit? Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is not actually in Atlanta, it is in a ghetto called College Park.

  • New Orleans International Airport - is not in New Orleans.. its actually in a sister city named Kenner. Now Louie made some great songs but there was no reason to rename the airport for him. It was a publicity stunt by Our very bad mayor Nagin. Many many people here in New Orleans still refuse to call this airport Armstrong and call it by it's rightful name N.O International Airport. If we are lucky, when this mayor is gone the next will name it back.

  • Great info, sir. Thank you!

  • 1:30 Cops hide there

  • Nice explanation of the IATA code designation.

Also worth noting is that there was a survivor of Moisant's crash-- his cat, Miss Paris, who always accompanied him when he flew.

  • Nice music for the drive to Armstrong Airport....
