My first commissioned mural done at L.A. Sands Boxing Gym (http://lasandsboxing.com) I would go to work from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Valley, then drive all the way to downtown Los Angeles for days on end to put a few hours in every night to work on this mural. The building itself is a little over 100 years old! Boxers featured (in order from bottom to top) are Jack Johnson, Floyd Mayweather, Jack Dempsey, Roberto Duran, Joe Louis, and Manny Pacman Pacquiao. Flat roller-paint black used for the coat, Spanish Montana China Red for the rays, Spanish Montana Amarillio Medio for the stencils. German Montana Gold line for the Gold.

Shoutout to DJ Stimey and Joe Fragile for helping me out with the stencils, and boxing coach Ramon Espada for hooking me up with the guy.

btw. On the way to the gym, where the 110 merges to the 10 (east?) you can see the infamous SABER L.A. River Mural. Incredible!

  • did u have to hand draw the pictures? if not, how did u put those picture in a big stencil? also wats a good store to get all the supplies u need for stenciling? btw u guys didnt an excellent job pacman... im hopin to make a shirt out of stencil with him but i need to know how u draw or printed his picture into such a big poster..

    GREAT WORK

  • Thanks for your kind words! What I did was I found pics of the boxers, then in photoshop I adjusted the levels/threshold adjustment layers to get the stencil shapes, and made vector paths of them to make them clean. Then went to kinkos to print cheap black&white sizes of them. Lastly, I used these prints as patterns to cut into my stencil board. I used file folders, because it's more detailed for one-time use. If you're gonna use the stencil often, I suggest using regular cardboard to cut into.

  • that sucks to train in that gym cause they charge too much

  • Actually, for a boxing gym in L.A., they're priced quite well. It could be alot worse (check out the boxing gym in oldtown pasadena...)

  • In the video What kind of paper you used for the stencils??

REALLY LIKE THE ART, HOPE 2 SEE MORE..

  • Good looks. I just used poster board, since it was only going to be used one time. If you're looking to use the stencil multiple times, either get laminated poster board, stencil board, or just use cardboard. Cardboard will last long as is practically free, but because of it's thickness you won't as fine of a line as you would with poster board
