It just seemed to me to be really tacky. I just can't believe Spielberg rode this ride without putting his hands over his face in embarrassment.

At the time this ride was made, Universal Studios didn't really have anything that was family-oriented ride-wise. With stuff like "Back to the Future" and "Jurassic Park: The Ride," you couldn't take the kids on those due to height restrictions and such.
"E.T. Adventure" was kind of in the vein of "It's a Small World" and "Peter Pan's Flight" from Disneyland in it's execution.
It was either that, or take the family to the "Animal Actors Stageshow."

Entertaining the younger kids, probably. They'll eat up anything.
