Like its much larger sister rally on the steps of the Colorado Capitol in Denver, this event occurs every year on April 20th at 4:20PM in celebration of cannabis, its politics, its medicinal benefits, its uses, and every other facet of this still nationally-illegal substance. Although Colorado is a rather conservative state overall, it is currently one of the few in the Union with medical marijuana laws in effect to date. Additionally, state-wide there has been a widespread increase in support of changing the criminal nature of marijuana and the severity of possession offenses. As such, the public outpouring of participation in this event year after year speaks volumes about the general change in the social mentality about cannabis and the culture surrounding it here in CO.
The rally itself was peaceful (go figure, right?), and drew 15,000 people to the Norlin Quadrangle at CU Boulder. The crowd was a healthy mix of CU students, local Boulderites, medical marijuana patients, marijuana legalization advocates and lobbyists, and a presence of event staff and police to merely keep things cordoned to the official area of the Quad. I overhead someone describe the proceedings as a "very small, very short music festival atmosphere" -- a rather apt observation. All in all, it was a singular sight to behold and an interesting possible look into a future of our nation. Say what you will about cannabis, there was nary a fist fight yesterday to be sure
