taxes will be sucked away from other services like schools to fund this cash hog. Why not offer all you can ride passes? sell them on a yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily basis? It will provide just as much incentive to take the bus because the pass is a bargain and you will use it more because you want to get your monies worth.

Well made and just as relevant today with ever-increasing pollution killing the planet faster than scientists predicted. Free transport also means that a bus service would not just be limited to the profitable routes as they are with private companies and thus would help prevent alienation of people living in the areas that are currently poorly served by buses. High fares currently make work difficult for low-paid and part-time workers. Decent wages and free fares would help alleviate poverty.
