The problem, people assume this is a rare occurrence. There are thousands of people serving years in State and Federal Prison for relatively minor drug offences. It's one of the few crimes you can be incarcerated for on a first offence.

Until it is 'your' kid who is facing the judge, what are the gains in being 'tough on crime'..? Do people really think they/their families are infalliable? That's the same type of thought as a child who thinks the world evolves around him!
