This month the ED Letter is on the enthralling, exhilarating subject of THE FINGER—yes, hold your applause until the end please. I know, the extensor mechanism of the finger doesn't sound so thrilling, but in reviewing the subject I learned a number of pearls that will probably change my practice and I thought you would enjoy them as well. There are many rare conditions (that we never see) that are much more exciting to talk about, but finger injuries are almost daily fare in the ED. The Boutonnier Deformity will be the central subject, since an understanding of this condition requires a review of the complex extensor mechanism of the finger.
