1955 Robert Aldrich film starring Ralph Meeker as Mike Hammer. Based on the Mickey Spillane novel. A classic film noir. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048261/
@churchylafemme55 Read the above comment. THE FILM FOLLOWS THE STRUCTURE OF SPILLANE"S NOVEL. SO OBVIOUSLY THE PLOT IS SIMILAR. It may not be exact I mean obviously but The NOvel was the basis for the movie. Same thing with Minority Report. things will be changed up but the Spillane's story and Philip K Dicks story are the basis for these particular two movies. So obviously these ideas didnt just appear in Aldrich or Spielbergs heads they got it from another source the original book
Aldrich and his writer made a mess of the story, where almost nothing makes sense. Try as they did to chop Mickey Spillane's character, Mike Hammer, down to size, sexy Ralph Meeker bursts free--cool, masculine and hot--and all the other actors play their parts to the limit--and that's why it works and survives as a great noir.
@oneindachamber While the film does follow the structure of Spillane's novel, the "atomic box" motif was added by the filmmakers to make a dark statement about the current state of affairs in 1956. This twist, along with the much darker ending than in the book, is the reason this film has attained cult status.
@fecklessbollocks yeah. right. Too bad Mickey Spillane wrote the book so fuck Aldrich becuase Spillane is the genius. I mean cum on where the fuck you think Aldrich got the story from it sure didnt just appear in his brain
The Big Sleep, the Maltese Falcon, and Kiss Me Deadly. Great books, and great movies. These all surely beat the living piss out of modern flicks such as Transformers or those shitty remakes. Yes, the classics are the best.

On the other hand, the movie plot is so dissimilar to the book that they hardly bear comparison.
