could have been a small homemade aluminum foil hot air balloon with some tray for heat source below it, maybe someone launched it from roof?

Thanks for commenting. That's a real possibility - the limits of the camera optics/sensor and available enhancement techniques will make true ID difficult.

The behavior of the object is what intrigued me. First it was as bright as venus (but at 3:30 pm?), and then it faded to nothing - gone as I was about to take further photos. At the time I felt that it was "aware" I was taking photos of it. Didn't appear to budge an inch in the sky the entire time - about 45-60 secs. total.

hmm, doesn't sound like homemade balloon behavior.. friend was telling me once about friend who made a bunch of them with students, foil balloons with lit candles in trays beneath, floated them all over the treetops..
