PETA is against Zoos. While Zoos are by no means problem free, PETA is overlooking the fact that Zoos, Aquariums, and Wildlife Parks are their single greatest tool to further the cause of animal rights.

  • OK first of all PETA is a joke in the animal world, I am a zookeeper sadly people dont understand the purpose of zoos not only for public information but also conservation without zoos and captive breeding programs surely numerous species would have become extinct and furthermore we follow VERY strict standards on care and the animals receive nothing but the best and to be honest they do not know any other life then being in a cage, we as a smarter species can comprehend and understand outside.

  • im in to wildlife parks that hold anmales zoos

See, this is why PETA drives me bat shit crazy! By taking such a radical position, the complete elimination of all Zoos, Aquariums, etc., you ensure that no one in the mainstream population will care what you have to say! OF COURSE I would prefer to see lions on the African Savannah! But my desires are not the issue here. The issue is getting enough support from the mainstream population, and PETA's methods will NEVER achieve that.

I just went back to my Zoo today and almost half of all our exhibits have displays highlighting the effects of global warming, and offering solutions, telling people what they can do differently to help. Sure, it probably won't convince the adults, but it will get the kids attention.

I blocked her because the conversation was going nowhere and I'd had enough. I take it you're a friend of hers? As for why else she'd engage with me, how am I supposed to know, I'm not psychic. If she wanted to know and understand my views, I explained them as clearly as I could. You make a fair point about the reason Zoos were ever started, but if we can still use them to effectively further conservation efforts, why shouldn't we?

  • @southhampton91

I do. I just don't want to get dragged into a fight by someone else over his comments. Which apparently I have anyway. Oh well, live and learn. :P And he actually removed a few of them before I even saw them. I believe strongly in my argument for Zoos, I just don't want to deal with people who don't, or won't, actually listen. The ONLY reason I support Zoos is because we do not live in a perfect world. If we did, Zoos would never have existed in the first place.

  • You watched Free Willy and then decided, screw freedom....Willy needs to get back in his goddamn swimming pool, lmao!!!

  • @DemonWithAHumanHeart You're entitled to that opinion, that's fine. Doesn't justify zoos, though.

  • @DemonWithAHumanHeart People don't only have to see animals as pictures on a screen - that's intellectually dishonest. You can actually go and see these animals in their natural environments, if you can afford it. If I couldn't afford a flight to see you, I wouldn't think for a moment that it would be justified to have you locked up in a cage and stuck in a zoo so I could have a gawk at you.

Sterile and lifeless images? Try a good photographer, or a Blu-Ray!

I never said there weren't other ways for people to learn about animals. I said that Zoos are the most effective way to make them care about saving them, and I've explained why I feel that way.
