Synopsis!
"The Great Escape" is a 1963 film made by United Artists and produced and directed by John Sturges. Based on a novel by Paul Brickhill, it tells the real-life story of an attempt by Allied prisoners of war to execute a mass escape from a German POW camp during World War II. Brickhill had been a prisoner of the camp with his friend George Harsh and would later base the book on their memories of the experience. The film stars Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, and David McCallum. James Donald appears in a supporting role as the head of the British POW's, and Gordon Jackson is one of the prisoners.

Plot!
Based on a true story, a group of allied escape artist type prisoners of war are all put in an 'escape proof' camp. Their leader decides to try to take out several hundred all at once. The first half of the film is played for comedy as the prisoners mostly outwit their jailers to dig the escape tunnel. The second half is high adventure as they use boats and trains and planes to get out of occupied Europe.
Fictionalized account of the massive Allied escape from a German prisoner of war camp during World War II. The German Luftwaffe has decided to put all of their rotten apples - those that continually try to escape - into one camp. As the planner of the escape notes, there is madness in their method as they have put a great deal of expertise into one camp. The plan originally called for over 200 men to escape through three tunnels. All escapees would have appropriate clothing and papers and the ultimate goal of the breakout is to make the Germans use an excess of resources to try and locate them. After one of tunnels is discovered, they concentrate on completing only one of the remaining two and in the end, 76 men manage to escape, three make back to the Allied side. In one of the atrocities of the war, 50 men are shot while "trying to escape".

  • this is one of my favorite war movies along with the dirty dozen. like the dozen this movie has an all star cast as well.steve mcqueen is one of the coolest actors that i have ever seen and james garner is great is just about everything he does.i heard that the producers of the film didn't want mcqueen to any of his own stunts but he still did a lot of them anyway because he's an expert bike rider.

  • That trailer is such a spoiler..

  • @Sniper123100 Thats cool im Bill gates and i am a billionare

  • Very interesting :)

  • My grandfather, Walter Newman wrote the original screenplay for The Great Escape, but took his name off of it because the producer changed a few details that my grandfather didn't think needed changing. He also wrote Cat Balou and The Magnificent Seven as well as several other famous screen plays.
