http://www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/so... Craig Smelser, of IBM, talks about how the cost of power and cooling for IT infrastructure is becoming a larger and larger concern for companies. This is a very relevant issue for storage, as much of what consumes our floor space is storage infrastructure. The solution? Products that allow them to reduce the capacity necessary to store, products that allow administrators to be more efficient and effective in how they manage that infrastructure, and products that just store things smart. As power and cooling and data center costs become more and more a part of IT infrastructures, by deploying greener products from IBM and Tivoli, companies achieve this and reduce overall IT spend.
the cost of power and cooling for IT infrastructure is becoming a larger and larger concern. In fact, some analysts have said its up to 50 cents of every dollar goes to that. So this is clearly a relevant issue for storage, as much of what consumes our floor space is storage infrastructure.
A few years ago, PBS did a This Old House project here in Austin that was actually building a home of a woman here at Tivoli we work with. It was clear that by adding more insulation to this womans house, that her direct heating and cooling bills would lower -- direct savings. But it also became clear that by reusing materials, by taking things that had been deployed in one way, reusing them in another like the roof shingles from her roof, grinding them up and adding them to roads there was indirect savings. Landfills didnt have to be filled, and there was value. The same applies to storage. You can buy more efficient disk and you can buy disk that has higher capacity and have direct savings benefits, or you can reuse storage by understanding how its being used and redeploy it into a more efficient use and have indirect savings as well.
IBM Tivoli have a full suite of products that address this green initiative, products that allow you to reduce the capacity necessary to store, products that allow administrators to be more efficient and effective in how they manage that infrastructure, and products that just store things smart. Weve all sent large emails to many people, but why should we back up the same email 10,000 times? We want to back it up once. Those are the kinds of things that make our products green.
The SAN Volume Controller allows you to manage the amount of disk capacity you need. The Tivoli Productivity Center allows administrators to be more efficient and effective with what they do. And Tivoli Storage Manager does just make smart decisions about what and when to back things up.
As power and cooling and data center costs become more and more a part of your IT infrastructure, by deploying greener products from IBM and Tivoli, you can reduce your overall IT spend.
