HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The Hampton University family is remembering one of its own with a special tribute on Tuesday night.

18-year-old Jeron Grayson was killed when a gunman fired into a party near his Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania home early Sunday morning.

As Grayson drove home to Pittsburgh on Friday, he was in a 6-car crash on the Garden State Turnpike. "Cars were trying to avoid the deer, cars began to stop. The car they were in hit the other car. The car they were in ended up under the tractor trailer. Jeron walked away from the accident by the grace of God with not a scratch," said his cousin Michelle Simpson.

Less than 24 hours later, Jeron lost his life at a party near his home. The alleged gunman, 19-year-old Keith Edward Jones opened fire after police said he was turned away at the door.

The loss of this charismatic and athletic young man is palatable, and so is the faith that is leading Michelle through it, "His life is being celebrated because he lived life. Jeron lived life big," she said.

Grayson already had big plans for Hampton University. When he moved in six weeks ago, he had his sights set on a specific goal.

"If you really pay attention to his pictures - very athletic actually - he came here to try out for the football team."

A big smile was just a piece of the package that Simpson said Jeron left on everyone he met. "Who wears lime green shirts? With silk lime green ties? And is confident in that? How may people say how does this look? He would say I like it, I'm wearing it and that settles it," said Simpson.

While Grayson may no longer walk among his family, the powerful spirit he carried within him will always be by their side.

"It's sad because we're gonna miss him. It's sad because in so many eyes it was premature. He was young. You would say he never lived his life, but what I see out of Jeron's life, he's bringing life together - he's giving life right now."

Hampton University is holding a candlelight vigil in Jeron's honor at James Hall. His family plans to wear Polo shirts because that was his favorite name brand.
