At its height in the second century A.D., the Roman Empire was the beacon of learning, power, and prosperity in the western world. But the once-powerful Rome - rotten to the core by the fifth century - lay open to barbarian warriors who came in wave after wave of invasion, slaughtering, stealing, and ultimately, settling. As chaos replaced culture, Europe was beset by famine, plague, persecutions, and a state of war that was so persistent it was only rarely interrupted by peace. THE DARK AGES profiles those who battled to shape the future, from the warlords whose armies threatened to cause the demise of European society, such as Alaric, Charles the Hammer, and Clovis; to the men and women who valiantly tended the flames of justice, knowledge, and innovation including Charlemagne, St. Benedict, Empress Theodora, and other brave souls who fought for peace and enlightenment. It was in the shadows of this turbulent millennium that the seeds of modern civilization were sown.

  • This is crap. The Moors were black. The word Moor comes from the Greek word Mauros which means "black or very dark" Those actors playing Moors looked just like the other Europeans. History channel loves to distort African history. They should be exiled for corruption.

  • @naleyan Trust me, this shit is propaganda.

  • does anyone believe this crap?

  • What a mistake in a seemingly informative documentary ! Excommunication is NOT,, condemnation to hell for eternity '' at all ! The Catholic Church teaches that excommunication is the exclusion from the Church for grave (usually public) offences. It includes the ban from receiving the Holy Communion. Normally, it is temporary and can be lifted after an offender does penance for his sin(s) and fulfills other requirements of the Church. Moviemakers should do more research before they start filming.

  • You gotta admit the Dark Ages were a pretty cool time. Despite the bad things sprouting around.

  • THE FRANKS WAS HERETIC CREATURES, WAS NOT christians.

  • @MrLantean THE BYZANTIUM IS GREEK

  • God bless Martell

  • @kyle887923 Although the Franks defeated Muslim invaders from Spain and saved Western Europe, it was another war that truly saved Christendom. The main Muslim forces were concentrating their resource and manpower to attack and conquer Constantinople. The Eastern Roman Empire was the only state in Christendom that was strong and stable enough to resist Muslim invaders. If the city was captured, the Muslims would used it resources to conquer Christendom.
