The Screaming Gummy Bear Demo (AKA The Flaming Gummy Bear Demo)
Potassium chlorate (KClO3) is heated until it melts (356 degC). A gummy bear (mostly sucrose) is added, and the gummy bear ignites in a very intense, very bright, very cool flame. The reaction proceeds as follows:
2 KClO3 --(heat)--) 2 KCl + 3 O2
C12H22O11 + 3 O2 --) 9 C + 3 CO2 + 11 H2O + 5635 kJ
The potassium chlorate decomposes to potassium chloride and molecular oxygen. The oxygen supports the combustion of sugar.
Would you kindly perform one with Barium Chlorate?
