Just because Bobby fischer said some bad things about 911, probably because he was angry about things in past, doesn't mean he should have been locked up in Japan. Everyone has their moments and says some stupid things that they shouldnt have.

I just finished reading an excellent bio of Bobby Fischer. It's called Endgame, and it was written by Frank Brady, an old friend of Fischer's. I was 14 when Fischer played Spassky and I, along with hundreds of thousands of others, watched PBS's coverage of the match. It was fascinating, and we were all thrilled when Fischer won. Later, on talk shows, he seemed like a nice, regular guy. Who could guess that, within 15 years, he'd lose his marbles.

I knew almost all of Bobby's friends...and played with them for decades in the Village,online,and special "haunts".His comments of 9/11 cannot be defended...ever.His madness increased as his greatest opponent became HIMSELF the moment Spassky resigned the first match.Without the Russians to fully hate anymore,his mind began to feed on itself as a shark will bite itself if it starts bleeding.Rev. Lombardy never got the credit he deserved for Fischer's triumph.Death at age 64 (squares)..fitting.

I don't think it makes sense that his hatred for Communism "transmuted" into his hatred for America.
There are legitimate reasons for hating any government. All forms of mass human shepherding are flawed.. because humans are flawed.

@aclock2 He was extraordinary, but not unique. There's plenty of extremely talented people who faded away into mental illness. But I guess that explanation is just not exciting enough for some people. Good luck, let me know if any evidence turns up about what he was talking about
